As the (6-6) Baltimore Ravens welcome the (3-8-1) Minnesota Vikings to M&T Bank Stadium this Sunday, they will also welcome an opposing fanbase that bleeds the same color: purple.
Since the beginning of the Joe Flacco/John Harbaugh era, there has only been one meeting between the two purple teams, a match-up I unfortunately remember all too well. The Ravens lost at Minnesota because of a botched potential game-winning field goal (by Steven Hauschka) at the end of an almost-comeback game. Now the Vikings will enter Baltimore turf and step into a different world of purple— a purple mixed with black that represents the bruising nature of a stout Ravens defense.
The Vikings are essentially out of the playoff race, and with the Ravens fighting to keep their Wildcard Playoff spot with just 4 games left in the regular season, this is a must-win game for them. Fortunately, they have the luxury of playing at home where they are most dominant. Check out this awesome color stat, provided by Glidden Paint, that illustrates how successful the Ravens are when playing at home in their purple jerseys:
So on paper, the Ravens are expected to win this game. No, they must win this game. However, it won’t come easy as the most fearsome man in purple on Sunday will arguably be Adrian Peterson. The Ravens number 1 priority will be to contain the
run. They can’t flat-out stop a physical beast like Peterson, but they will have to do their best to prevent big plays. If the Ravens can handle this task, then I firmly believe Joe Flacco will be able to carry the offense and have a field day against the 30th ranked Vikings secondary. Prediction: 27-17, Ravens.
Let the battle for the better purple team begin.
