If he even has a job in the NFL next season, Chad Ochocinco will have a new name on his jersey. The current New England Patriots wide receiver will change his last name back to Johnson.
Ochocinco, 34, made the announcement on his twitter page last Wednesday saying, “I’ll be Johnson on July 4th.”
He selected “Ochocinco” as a Spanish translation of his uniform number 85. But the literal transition is just “eight five.”
After legally making the name change in 2008, he had trouble with the NFL. Since thousands of jerseys with the name “Johnson” had already been printed, the league told him he’d be fined millions of dollars if he demanded an immediate update for his uniform. Rather than taking the hefty fine, Ochocinco waited till the 2009 season.
It is believed that Ochocinco is changing his name back for his wedding in July to Evelyn Lozada.
