The week began with the Ravens announcing their decision to fire Joe Flacco’s QB Coach, Jim Zorn. Flacco took this announcement personally and said that he felt like it was an insult to him after what he thought was a strong season.
Then on Tuesday, the Ravens signed a five-year contract with Punter Sam Koch. According to the Ravens press release,
“Koch finished the 2010 campaign with 39 punts inside the 20-yard line, which was second-most in the league and sixth-best all-time. For his career, Koch owns the Ravens’ record with 149 punts inside the 20.”
Also on Tuesday, the Ravens held an all-hands personnel meeting that included Owner Steve Bisciotti, Head Coach John Harbaugh and General Manager Ozzie Newsome, and was the official start of the road to improvement. According to the BaltimoreRavens.com,
“The personnel meeting serves as a way to take the Ravens’ self-scouting and apply it towards 2011. At this time last year, the Ravens’ main priorities were upgrading the weapons around quarterback Joe Flacco, adding depth at cornerback and building more of a pass rush.”
On Thursday, the Ravens announced their plan to tag Haloti Ngata sometime mid-month. According to Ravens Insider,
“The NFL confirmed Wednesday that teams can apply the franchise tag in a 14-day window beginning Feb. 10.That’s the period when the Ravens will likely put the tag on defensive tackle Haloti Ngata to keep him off the free-agent market. Team officials recently talked to Ngata about a new deal, but both sides understand that such a big-money contract can’t be completed until the new collective bargaining agreement is signed.”
